The Zwitserleven Texel Round has evolved over 32 years into the world’s biggest catamaran event. Every year approximately 600 catamarans battle on the waters around Texel for the honour; the aim is to circumnavigate the island of Texel as quickly as possible. With approximately 15,000 visitors it is a wonderful public event. The Texel beach looks splendid with 600 catamarans in full rig.
While the sailors get ready to go out on the water, the spectators can watch the teams and the boats and wish them success. Launching the boats can be very exciting. When the breakers are high it is quite an art to get the boats safely out to sea.
This year the mass start will be on Saturday morning 19 June around 12 am. The starting line is right in front
of the beach and is easily visible to the public.
Just before starting you can feel the tension on the beach. A helicopter flies low over the starting line and gives the 10 minute signal with blue smoke and the starting signal with red smoke.
After the start, the race may be followed on screens with running scores; and the announcer on the beach gives a live account in cooperation with Radio Texel. To amuse the public there are big, fun live performances and of course there are plenty of good things to eat and drink. After approximately 3 hours of sailing the first boats come into view of the finish.
The first-finishers receive a festive welcome on the big stage. In the evening the big award ceremony is held in the big tent and the Zwitserleven Texel Round ends with a wonderful party.
Starting in 2010 the Zwitserleven Texel Round will be part of the Zwitserleven Sailing Week. To the ‘biggest cat race in the world’ new events have been added, such as the Zwitserleven EK Slalom Wind surfing and the Nacra Championships. This makes the Zwitserleven Sailing Week the biggest sailing event in Europe!
